Curriculum letter Year 5 Spring term 2010

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Dear Parents,

This half term we will be testing the children in Maths, English and Science. Assessment forms a vital part in planning the work ahead for your child and it is a method of measuring progress over the year. It is also a comparison to where your child’s standard is in relation to the National average.

In maths, we will continue to focus on oral and mental skills. We will be working  on shape and space, measuring, identification and recognition of properties of shape. Money and time problems will also be part of our curriculum. Many thanks to all parents for their support in helping the children with tables. Some children still need more practice.

Literacy will continue with the development of writing skills. It is also essential that children read at home every night. There will be a focus on Myths and Legends and Traditional Folk Tales.

Maths and Spelling homework will continue. Spellings will be tested each Friday and folders should also be handed in on a Friday. Maths homework should be handed in on a Monday. Science homework is given out on Friday and must be returned the following Friday. Please, could parents sign the homework diaries each week.

Mrs Clayton will be taking Rugby this term. Could you please ensure that your child has a set of warm clothing as the children will be going outside.

Other topics this half term: R.E. (inspirational people), Geography (rivers and mapping), Science (space), ICT (Internet research and controlling devices), P.E. (swimming, rugby) and Design (Textiles, printing, collage)

Thank you for all your support over the last term,

Mrs Upton

January 2010 Newsletter

Friday, January 15th, 2010

Happy New year to all children, parents, staff, governors, parishioners who receive this newsletter. We have some exciting developments over the next few months, with building work and new projects in school. We have also several social events planned for the year, which we hope you can attend, and more importantly, enjoy!

Mr Eaton

Building work

Due to the deep freeze, our building work is slightly behind schedule, but the builders are working hard to make up this time, and we should see an acceleration over the next few weeks. In order to keep disruption to a minimum, we have arranged for timber partitions to go into the junior classes, so work can continue behind the temporary wall and keep the children in classes for as long as we can. Alternative teaching  areas will be made when the steel work is inserted and when the decoration is undertaken.

Football club

The football club for years 4 to 6 will resume on Monday 1st February form 3.30pm to 4.30pm. Please remember your kit, including boots and shinpads.

Clubs

We have several clubs running in school, with Gymnastics for years 2 to 4 on Mondays, Netball during lunchtimes, Wake Up Shake Up on Wednesday mornings and Gardening club about to resume. Mrs Bowden is running the choirs for infants on Wednesday lunchtimes and for juniors after school on Wednesdays until 4.30pm.

Music

We are pleased to see the return of Mr Fox to our music lessons for guitar and keyboard tuition. We thank Mrs Taylor for her hard work with the children. She will be continuing with the flute tuitions on tuesdays. The lesson taught by Mr Fox will return on Wednesdays so please remember your music sheets and to practice!

Christmas fair

Thank you to everyone who supported the Christmas Fair. It was a great success so thank you to the parents, children and staff for their support, ideas and hard work.

Sports events

We are competing in some sporting events in the next few weeks, including the quarter finals of the Elliott Cup in football, the Swimming Gala for Wyre at Fleetwood Pool as well as Speedstacking and Gymnsatics.

Non-Uniform Day

We are holding a non-uniform day on Friday 5th March, in return for donating small presents for our Mother’s Day Event the following Friday, which has been very successful in previous years. We are also hoping to receive donations for our chocolate Bingo evening and we are grateful for all chocolate received.

Friends of Sacred Heart

We are holding our next meeting on Tuesday 23rd february, in school, form 3.30pm to 4.30pm. There will be a free creche and refreshments as usual!

Literacy and Numeracy tuition

As you have heard in the news, the government has funded tuition for Literacy and Numeracy and we have these groups running already in school. We are delighted to welcome Mrs Donnelly who is teaching Literacy. She also teaches at St John’s in Poulton. The Numeracy will be taught by Mrs Blencowe.

Family support worker

We are delighted to announce that from Monday 1st February we will have a family support worker every morning in school, and during some afternoons. We have appointed  Mrs Steward to the role, and she is looking forward to getting to know our children and families.

Peter Pan Pantomime

We are delighted with the success of the trip to the panto before Christmas, and if our social events go well again we will be going to the panto  this Christmas, with aladin to look forward to.
